  1. "Showing and Telling"

    Questions To Consider:

How does this child respond to your words and actions?
How is she able to understand and follow your visual and verbal directions?
How does she interact with you during this experience?

    Why is this Important:

Children are better able to follow rules when verbal cues are combined with gestures. Showing them what you want them to do while you say it gives them the opportunity to follow the rule successfully.

    What To Do:

Tell this child what she should be doing while you show her using gestures and visual cues. For example, point to a book and then to the shelf while saying, This child, the books go on the bookshelf.
You can also use this strategy to draw this child's attention to other people's feelings. See Keighla's face? She is telling you that she doesn't like it when you poke her.
You may need to repeat the process to give this child the opportunity to hear and see the directions again. It is important to use a calm, respectful tone of voice when using this strategy.
